Mastitis is an udder inflammation caused by harmful bacteria that can seriously damage a herd. It appears either as clinical mastitis, where the milk is visibly altered with flakes or lumps and the udder becomes swollen and warm, or as subclinical mastitis, which remains hidden because the milk looks completely normal despite having a dangerously high cell count. Around eighty percent of these bacterial infections spread from cow to cow during milking through contaminated equipment, shared towels, or unwashed hands, while the remaining infections are picked up directly from the bedding and resting areas inside the barn.
